Biography

Cindy Revell was raised on a Saskatchewan farm where she loved to build forts, read, draw and spend time with her vivid imagination.  She grew up to do those very same things although she traded the forts for a chicken house, garden and studio. There was never any question that Cindy would become anything other than an artist and she went to MacEwan University where she received her diploma in Environmental Graphic Design.  She worked as a designer and illustrator for several years before continuing as a freelance illustrator.

Cindy is a Governor General nominee and award winning artist whose work brings life to children’s books, CD’s, books, magazines, calendars, packaging, murals and other very fun things all over North America.  A few of her clients are: Disney, L.A. Times, Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, Better Homes and Gardens and Scholastic Publishing.

A versatile artist, Cindy creates whimsical and vibrant oil paintings featuring gardens, birds cats, interiors and pattern which act as symbols for the wonders and mysteries of life. While her lively imagination is the raw material for her illustration and whimsical tableaus her appreciation for the ordinary beauty found in everyday life is the inspiration for her introspective zen-like still lifes. ‘Found objects, items containing meaning and history, flowers and produce from my yard resonate with me for their symbolism, place in our lives, connection to the natural world, or sometimes simply for their sheer beauty or humour.’

Cindy is inspired by the work of the Flemish painters and numerous old masters, folk, medieval, Asian and eastern art.

Cindy’s paintings are in public, corporate, private collections, and travelling museum shows in Canada and the US.

She is represented by illustration agent Deborah Wolfe Ltd. of Philadelphia. Her work can be seen at the Lando Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta and the Candler Art Gallery in Camrose, Alberta. Cindy is a a signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, member of the Oil Painters of America and the Alberta Oil Painters.

Artist Statement

At times my whimsical oil paintings are a straightforward response to inspiration, other times they are narrative with hints of mystery and sometimes they are both. Primal patterns, spirited cats, inquisitive birds, flowers inspired by my country yard, and other animals fuse in an exuberant mix that imply ‘what if’ and ‘anything is possible’.

My paintings come from my imagination and from whatever has recently inspired me, the pistachio colour of an aspen trunk in the rain, a spotted horse in the pasture or patterns in fabric. Sometimes the ideas come in an instant, other times they simmer and stew and often I make tiny thumbnail drawings in sketchbooks, notebooks and bits of paper that litter the studio, eventually those ideas all find their way into my work. I start a painting by drawing the idea on canvas with oil paint keeping design and rhythm in mind. Lively brushstrokes bring movement and energy to the paintings while vibrant colour and pattern infuse them with joy and a sense of mood.

Painting is a way to take my imagination and those fleeting moments of light or glimpses of colour and meld them together on canvas. The resulting painting is both a reliving of experience and a whole new story.
